ABOUT THE SYSTEM

sonora2.jpg (8870 bytes)The Sonora High School system began generating power on December 18, 1999. Unlike most of our systems, this system is mounted directly to a southeast or east-southeast facing metal roof sloped at approximately 4 degrees, so it looks a bit different than our flat-roof mounted systems (like the one at Childress) or our ground-mounted systems (like those at Abilene, Corpus Christi, and Presidio). However, the size of the PV array, the modules used, and all other system components are identical. The system is rated at 4 kilowatts.

ABOUT SONORA

Settled in 1889, after a water well was drilled on what is now the courthouse lawn, Sonora still celebrates its reknown as one of the last of the frontier towns.  Sonora boasts a history that tells of the taming of the Old West - tales of a hidden water well, fence disputes, rustled cattle, frontier trades and natural gas booms.  Here the story of brave pioneers who forged order out of an untamed land is written on every building and every face.

In Sonora, you can explore the mysterious underground world of the Caverns of Sonora, considered to be one of the most beautiful and unusual caves in the United States.  You can also hunt wild game, visit the historic downtown area that's rich in pioneer heritage, or tour the original Sutton County jail, that was once home to many frontier outlaws. The Sutton County Courthouse was completed in 1891 and is located in Sonora. A windmill graces the lawn of the Sutton County courthouse. It marks the original well used by the building. These wooden and steel towers, found throughout Texas, were built to tap underground water for homesteads and livestock.A "Covered Wagon Dinner Theater", is held every Saturday night from June-August featuring entertainment and dinner right from the chuck wagon.
