ABOUT EL CAMPO

El Campo is located southeast of Houston on US Highway 59.   The city's population of 10,768 takes special pride in the city's rich history.   The railroad reached the area in 1805, and Mexican cowboys who brought cattle herds to the railhead called the site "El Campo" (the camp). When incorporated in 1905, city fathers used the Spanish words in naming city. The city is now a center for agriculture (it is located in the largest rice-producing county in the state), oil, gas, manufacturing. Excellent hunting and fishing opportunities abound.

The Murals of El Campo are an ongoing community project to present the history of El Campo to residents and visitors alike. At the present time there are more than twelve murals painted on prominent buildings throughout the city.   The murals were commissioned by the building owners as their contribution to portray the history of El Campo for all to see.

The El Campo Museum of Art, Science & History features big-game trophies from five continents displayed against huge murals and in natural settings.
